Arthritis is the swelling of one's joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis which cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints and that list continues to grow.

Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in N. America along with illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Almost everyone over 60 years old has some form of arthritis, however the symptoms may be so mild and would only detectible by X-ray.

The 2 major types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is the result of daily wear and tear of the joints from aging. The once-smooth sliding surface of our weight bearing joints such as the back, hip, knee, spine become rough resulting in friction and ultimately pain. Initially, the condition may start with a minor dull pain--similar to a toothache--while walking but soon the pain may eventually worsen and become continuous and even debilitating.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is thought to be an Autoimmune Disease where for some unknown reason, the body's own immune system begins to attack body tissues. This often results in damage to the finger, wrist, elbow joint linings and cartilages which lead to swelling, stiffness, pain and even deformity.

There is currently no cure for arthritis and the common western treatment methods include:

    - Non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen
    - Steroid drugs such as Cortisone, Hydrocortisone which is sometimes injected into affected joints to reduce inflammation
    - Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, exercise to strengthen muscles, diet
    - Surgery & joint replacement in extreme circumstances

The long term side effects from taking non-steroid and steroid drugs may include stomach irritation, gastritis, ulcers, skin reactions, rashes, increased blood coagulation, cataracts, muscle weakness, high blood pressure etc.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offers all natural, non-chemical relief for arthritis pain without adverse side effects. Acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins (the body's own natural painkillers) that brings about pain relief. In addition, acupuncture also stimulates the adrenal glands to produce natural steroids that have anti-inflammatory properties which relieve the swelling that is present in Arthritis.

Combined with Acupuncture, Dr. Zhao's all natural herbal capsules also contain Anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties which reduce swelling and enhances the body's immune system resulting in improved circulation and restoration of healthy joint functions.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression: According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, there are approx. 1 million Canadians who suffer from some form of depression and The World Health Organization predicts depression will be the second-leading cause of disability in the world by 2020, trailing only heart disease. Western antidepressant drugs such as Prozac, Paxil -- which work by altering certain chemicals (e.g. Serotonin) called neurotransmitters in our brains -- are often prescribed for people suffering from depression.

Chinese traditional medicine does not recognize depression as a particular illness per se but rather an internal imbalance or blockage caused by the exposure to external stresses. Such stress, if not treated, can cause energy blockage or changes of the neurotransmitters such as a decrease of brain concentration of the serotonin levels -- resulting in symptoms such as anxiety, poor sleep, fatigue, and eventually, depression.

Acupuncture, combined with Chinese herbs have proven to be very effective, safe and natural method to treat anxiety, stress, emotional swings which may lead to depression.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which there is a high level of sugar (Glucose) in the bloodstream. When we eat foods, it is broken down into Glucose by our liver which is absorbed by our fat and muscle's cells and stored as energy. Diabetes develops when the Pancreas does not produce enough Insulin, a hormone that allows the body to absorb Glucose.

Type 1 Diabetes is when the body makes little or no Insulin requiring daily injections of Insulin. It typically occurs during childhood or adolescence.

Type 2 Diabetes is where the body makes Insulin but cannot use it properly. It typically develops in adulthood but is becoming more prevalent in children because of high obesity rates. Type 2 Diabetes accounts for over 90% of Diabetes cases.

Diabetes if not adequately treated and controlled can result in heart disease and stroke, nerve damage, kidney failure, blindness and limb amputations.

There is no cure for Diabetes.

What are the Trends of Diabetes in Canada?

Formerly considered a disease of adults and the elderly, Diabetes is now common in children as young as 10 years old.

The percentage of Canadians suffering from Diabetes increased 70% in the last 10 years due to our increasing sedentary lifestyle, high obesity rates and rich diet of processed foods.

Western drugs such as Metformin and Thiazolidinedione (TZDs) are commonly used to treat Diabetes; however, patients taking these drugs may experience mild side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, gas, water retention to more serious side effects such as hepatitis and kidney failure.

Dr. Zhao’s Acupuncture and One Down therapy are a natural way to control Type1 and 2 Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes.

Acupuncture for Treating Diabetes

Dr. Zhao’s Acupuncture therapy improves blood flow, circulation and helps balance Yin-Yang, Qi-Blood, Pancreas, Stomach, kidney, lung and other Zeng-Fu organs.

The result is lowered blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduced food cravings and thirst, reduction in the cardiovascular complications of diabetes and preservation of nerve function.

Acupuncture Therapy (1 to-2 times per week) should be combined with Chinese herbal medicine for maximum effectiveness and results.

One Down (All Natural Herb Formula)

Dr. Zhao’s proprietary One Down herb formula contains all natural Trichosanthes Root, Notoginseng, Honeysuckle Flower and Berberine.

These natural herbs improve Pancreatic function, boost the immune system and contain a wide range of proteins, enzymes and amino acids, many of which have an anti-inflammatory properties and have been used in used in Traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years in the treatment of high blood sugar.

Dr. Zhao’s patients typically experience a reduction of blood sugar levels, often to normal levels, in 2 to 3 weeks.

Can Western and Chinese Medicine be used together for Diabetes?

Yes. Dr. Zhao is trained in both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine and encourages his patients to use a combination of Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine with traditional Western diabetes drugs like insulin injections.

One Down can be taken safely with western medicines.

Many of Dr. Zhao’s patients find the combination to be more effective than either one on its own—the result is often a reduction in the dosage or even elimination of Insulin required.

How effective is Chinese Medicine in the treatment of Diabetes?

Chinese herbs have been used to treat Diabetes for thousands of years in Asia.

There is a growing body of scientific studies by western Universities investigating the effectiveness of various Chinese herbs in the treatment of Diabetes. One of the most comprehensive studies is by The Centre for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney in Australia.*

The researchers considered data from 16 clinical trials including 1,391 people who received 15 different herbal formulations. According to their findings, combining herbal medicines with lifestyle changes is twice as effective as lifestyle changes alone at normalizing patients' blood sugar levels. Those given the herbal formulations were less likely to develop full blown diabetes during the study period.

Impotence (or erectile dysfunction [ED])

Impotence (or erectile dysfunction [ED]) is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. It is estimated 10% of men worldwide suffer from ED and this figure increases dramatically with age-affecting over half of men over 65 years old

Physical causes of ED include diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, hypertension, as well as prostate surgery, liver disease and obesity.

Other risk factors of ED include smoking, stress, fatigue and excessive alcohol or drug consumption.

Dr. Zhao’s acupuncture and Yin-Yang balance capsules therapy can help those with ED by stimulating blood flow to the penile area and also improving the libido. Most patients experience benefit in 6 to 12 sessions.

Acupuncture and Infertility: It is estimated that one in seven couples have problems conceiving worldwide and this ratio is similar across most countries, independent of the country's level of development.

The common causes of infertility in women include:
    - Ovulation problems
    - Tubal blockage
    - Age-related factors
    - Uterine problems

The main cause of male infertility is usually low sperm count.

Acupuncture and herbs have proven to be very effective as an alternative or a complementary method to western methods such as In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), which can costs tens of thousands of dollars, for treating infertility. Why acupuncture works for infertility problems is still debatable; although the conventional theory is that acupuncture helps regulate blood flow to the reproductive organs and stabilizes hormone levels in the body's system. This in turn results in increase ovarian function in women and increased sperm production in men.

A landmark German study from 2002 showed that women who underwent IVF and received acupuncture got pregnant at a 60% higher rate compared to women just undergoing IVF treatment*.

The following is a typical course of treatment (typically 6 months in length) with Dr. Zhao:
    - Consultation to determine etiology of your infertility
    - Acupuncture once or twice per week.
    - Chinese Herb powder or capsules if necessary
    - Diet and nutrition recommendations

Acute and Chronic Insomnia: Like pain, insomnia can be classified as acute (lasting less than 1 month) or chronic (lasting months). Insomnia is a very common condition in which a person isn't getting enough sleep or is getting poor quality of sleep and the typical patterns of insomnia include
    - The inability to fall asleep quickly
    - Awakening shortly after falling asleep and being unable to resume sleeping
    - The inability to sleep soundly
    - The inability to sleep at all

Prolonged insomnia can result in muscular fatigue, inability to focus, hallucinations, depression which can leading to more serious conditions such as hypertension and heart disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Better Sleep: According to Chinese medicine theory, insomnia occurs when there is an imbalance in the body's Yin (cool) and Yang (hot) energy or between organs (heart and kidney). For example, women often experience insomnia and 'hot flashes' during menopause and according to Chinese medicine theory, this is the result of a deficiency of Yin energy.

Dr. Zhao will help you to determine the cause-- and not the symptoms-- of your insomnia. He will then prescribe therapy which rebalances your body's organs and resulting energy levels.

One of the common noted benefits of acupuncture includes better sleeping patterns, and relaxation; this is the result of increased endorphin levels which is often lacking in people suffering from insomnia. In addition to acupuncture therapy, many Insomnia sufferers have benefited from Dr. Zhao's Yin Yang capsules, which contain powerful, concentrated herbal extracts such as Acanthopanax Root (known as Siberian Ginseng in the West), which has been proven to be effective for treating insomnia.

As opposed to simply taking sleeping pills which do not cure the cause of Insomnia, acupuncture combined with Dr.Zhao's all natural herbal capsules are a non-chemical, non-addictive and natural alternative to treat insomnia.

Menopause is a natural transitional period in a woman's life when menstruation becomes less frequent and eventually stops. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 to 55 when the body stops producing eggs and the female hormones Estrogen and Prosterone.

The most common symptoms of menopause include:
    - Hot Flashes/Night sweats
    - Insomnia
    - Mood Swings
    - Decreased Libido
    - Vaginal Atrophy

The rate of decline in the production of Estrogen and Prosterone affects the severity and duration of the above symptoms.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in the form of gels, patches, oral medications is the most common western medical treatment prescribed for Menopause. Risks associated with long term HRT use include increased risk of heart disease, cancer, strokes and blood clots.

Natural alternatives to HRT include lifestyle changes such as exercising, reduced caffeine and alcohol consumption, eating more foods high in Phytoestrogens such as alfalfa, apples, asparagus and soy.

According to Chinese medicine, Menopause occurs in which the Kidney's Yin energy is declining and needs to be nourished.

The main difference between Chinese and western medicine in treating Menopause is Chinese medicine encourages the body to produce natural female hormones and not rely on the introduction of synthetic chemicals into the body.

Acupuncture combined with Yin Yang Balance capsules are a natural alternative to synthetic Hormone Replacement Treatments, working with your endocrine system to nourish and restore the body back into normal balance and normalizing hormone production levels.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Migraines: Migraines are painful, often debilitating headaches, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, noise, and smell. These throbbing headaches tend to reoccur and can last from hours to days. The precise underlying cause of migraines is unknown but the principal theory is that they are caused by spasms in the arteries that supply blood to the brain. While headaches may be a warning sign of more serious medical conditions, people most often experience either a tension headache, a migraine or both.

he following are often triggers of migraines:
    - Stress
    - Menstrual Period
    - Weather
    - Allergies
    - Certain drugsor foods

Dr. Zhao will diagnose the cause of your migraine and prescribe the appropriate treatment. For example, acupuncture-which in addition to increasing the amount of endorphins in the body also increases blood flow in the body and tissues-- has been proven to be very effective in treating migraines.

Pain is a symptom from a variety of causes such as injury, disease, and strenuous activity. Pain is a message sent by the body to the brain from the affected area but pain can affect the entire body and mind. Pain is classified into two categories: chronic and acute.

Chronic Pain is pain which persists and lasts for weeks, months and even years. There may have been an initial incident - a fall, sprain, infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain such as arthritis, cancer but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Many chronic pain conditions affect older adults. Common chronic pain complaints include headache, lower back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself), psychogenic pain (pain not due to past disease or injury or any visible sign of damage inside or outside the nervous system).

Untreated, chronic pain can disturb appetite, sleep, energy, focus and can also lead to other debilitating conditions.

Acute Pain is usually associated with an injury, accident, or acute illness. This kind of pain usually elicits a response from the sympathetic nervous system, such as sweating, accelerated heartbeat, raised blood pressure, quickened breathing, and so on. The pain is a message from your body to pay attention and get treatment.

Treatment: Therapies to treat pain can be grouped into chemical and non-chemical treatments. Generally speaking, a painkiller is a chemical treatment. The underlying condition causing the pain continues, but the pain is not felt. Some chemical painkillers may produce side effects, such as ulcers, liver, and kidney problems and increasing tolerance leading to long-trm addictions.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offers non-chemical relief for pain without adverse side effects. Studies show that acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins (the body's own natural painkillers) that brings about balance, pain relief and support for the body's natural healing process.

Acupuncture stimulates blood circulation, frees and soothes energy channels, and transforms the condition of stasis found in bruises, muscle pain, spasms, and swollen vessels.

Dr. Zhao's acupuncture offers a safe, natural, effective treatment for treating the root causes of acute and chronic pain.
